Yoga and Ayurveda from India

I would like to introduce a couple of our wonderful people at the Gem, starting with Dr Karuna Jaiswal. Karuna is our Ayurvedic specialist. I had a consult with her a few weeks ago and was amazed at how correct a diagnosis she made. Karuna is now helping me with my health issues and although the herbal medicines are not the greatest taste, all she has prescribed is working. Karuna looks at our body constitution to help diagnose underlying health issues not just the present symptom, so I'd say she has the opposite of the “band-aid” approach. This way she is able to actually help her clients gain a better understanding of their health and how they can maintain wellness. Not only is Karuna an amazing practitioner but she is welcoming, caring and has a beautiful sense of humour. Karuna consults on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 11:30am and her last appointment is at 5pm. The Gem now also stocks a number of Ayurvedic teas, soaps and tonics.

A couple of weeks ago Rajendra Pandey came to work as a Yoga Teacher at The Gem. He is rapidly gaining a following of loyal students as his style of teaching is very different from what we normally see. Raj is from India and has studied with many of the masters there. Several of his students think I should advertise him as “An Authentic Indian Yoga Teacher” as they are gaining so much more from him than previous teachers they have learned from. His classes include all the usual things; asana, pranayama, meditation, mudra and relaxation but also include anecdotes of his life as a yoga student, herbs and foods we should eat along with a commentary of the benefits of what he is teaching. Raj teaches on Monday's and Wednesday's at 6pm.

Reiki 1 Workshop

Our first Reiki I workshop was held on the weekend. Reiki is an effective and simple touch-activated energy for natural health, relaxation and self-empowerment. There were seven of us at the workshop which was led by Nick Vlassis, our Reiki Master. It was a wonderful, intimate and nurturing experience for all. We learned about the practice of Reiki, the history and the energy.

Reiki is not taught in the way other healing modalities are taught. It is transferred to the student by the Reiki Master during an attunement process. This process opens the crown, heart, and palm chakras and creates a special link between the student and the Reiki source. Nick gave each participant two attunements and it was wonderful to see the energy integrated with each of them. We swapped Reiki treatments with one another which was a beautiful way to share. Thanks to everyone who attended and a big thanks to Nick for all his input and for “infecting” us all with love.

If anyone is interested in attending our next Reiki I course please contact me at the Gem.
