More about Restorative Yoga

B.K.S. Iyengar of Pune, India developed Restorative Yoga. During Iyengar's early years, he was quite unwell, and to keep up with other students, he experimented with “props” to modify poses so that he could practice without too much strain. He used the props to recover from his illness and injury. Iyengar is now in his mid 90s and still teaching yoga.

Props like bolsters, blankets and yoga bricks are used to support the body, enabling one to rest in a yoga posture for relatively long periods of time, anywhere from one to twenty minutes. Although they look peaceful, restorative poses can be challenging for beginners, just because the body rests quietly doesn't mean the mind will settle into stillness too.

In time and with practice, one will be able to let go with ease and move into a place of deep contentment. This is what yoga is all about, learning to quiet and still our restless bodies and calm our busy minds so that we rest peacefully in the present moment and see the tranquillity that resides within us.

Please dress comfortably in clothing that is not restrictive, especially around the neck and waist.

Layers of clothing for warmth are recommended as when the body deeply relaxes blood flow changes and you can get cold easily.

Allow yourself time after your restorative session that is free from stresses and demands to enable you to gain the most benefit from your session.
